present pulling strength

I felt good and strong this morning doing some weighted chin ups. First I did 2×5×50 lbs, then did 3×3×60 lbs and then pulled singles each of 75 and 80 lbs. 80 lbs felt right about the limit, I might have been able to toss another 2.5 lb plate in the bag and [...]

5K to close out the year

Data suggests that doing the Magic 50 workout the day before a 5K race will slow me down. I’m not upset about it, I had lost a week of running with the gastroenteritis and so yesterday’s Race Against Time had gone from being a 5K where I hoped to do really well to one [...]

The Magic 50

The Magic 50 looks kind of simple and easy but it packs a wallop as I found out this morning. I decided to make it my workout for today. For the snatches, I used a 40-lb db and for the swings, I used a 60-lb db and did 10 2-armed swings instead of [...]

Small Notes on Grief

You will even open your eyes
and find how a blue iris
has remained. Just sometimes
how a scent sneaks in and then
it becomes all about ghosts
who are right behind. You should
be able to snap your head around
and see them there. All of them.
But just one eye catches a glimpse when turning,
back, just one to see [...]

Insulation necessary

It’s not really cold compared to what some places get, but 14 degrees is plenty cold for me. I’ve worn long underwear for today.
Was able to begin working out again over the weekend. On Saturday it was fun with dumbbells. 65, 50, and 40 lb ones, I would hoist them [...]

slow return to normalcy

I didn’t sleep quite so much yesterday. My stomach was nice and quiet, I ate a lunch and a dinner with no problems. Still had to use a lot more insulin than normal. I injected 31 units of Novolog and only ate around 60 grams of carbohydrate.
But over night I [...]

Ugh

Tuesday night everything was going all right and I headed off to bed. A little bit after settling in underneath the blankets I noticed that I was beginning to feel off — like I couldn’t get warm yet I felt like a fever was coming on and down deep in my bowels, the intestines [...]

Blood

I bled my fingers 7 times yesterday.  At 5:30 AM I woke up and my blood sugar was 87 mg/dL.  I would also test at 8:19 AM,  10:38 AM, 1:53 PM, 3:25 PM, 8:19 PM and 9:30 PM as I got near bedtime.  I had one persistent bleeder out of all those, the late morning [...]

A 5K on Saturday

So I ran a 5K race Saturday this last weekend.  Since the Broad Street Run in May, I haven’t really been having good runs in races.  Dash for Diabetes in May was okay, but my legs were tired from squatting.  June I had the meltdown as I was having Epstein-Barr re-activate.  September’s 5K at the [...]

I’ve got a new friend

The 40-lb dumbbell just wasn’t doing as much as it used to for me.  I bought a 50-lb one on Saturday and have begun using it to help build overhead pressing strength.  Every hour or so Saturday evening and Sunday I would grab it and do 5 reps with each arm.   Yeah, I’m going to [...]
